Knowing what was done: uses of a spreadsheet log le

چکیده
Spreadsheet use in educational environments has become widespread, likely because of the exibility and ease of use of these tools. However, they have serious shortcomings if the teacher is to understand exactly what students or others have done. It is far too easy for students to replace a formula that gives an apparently unacceptable answer with a number that they believe to be correct. The same concern applies to recorded marks, as well as to business spreadsheets and to other reports that are used for decision-making. While intentionally misleading changes to spreadsheet les receive much attention, simple mistakes are probably more common. Some of these, such as the Trans-Alta Utilities (Globe and Mail, 2003) cut and paste error that cost the rm $24 million (US), have extreme consequences. Few are merely embarrassing. A log le or audit trail, enhanced by suitable lters, can allow both intentional and accidental changes that cause erroneous results to be caught. In order to meet these requirements, we have developed server based software tool (TellTable) which allows editing, version control, and auditing of spreadsheet les. Users connect to the server using a standard web browser, and are able to access and edit spreadsheet les in a Java applet in the browser window. TellTable has been used for a pilot study to maintain marks and course information for a multi-section courses with several instructions and teaching assistants. This paper describes the TellTable software and preliminary results of the pilot test. Submitted November 2003; revised January 2004; accepted February 2004.

متن کاملGoals and Plans in Spreadsheet Calculation
Programming knowledge can be characterized in the form of goals and plans that describe what must be achieved and how this is done. We have conducted interviews of spreadsheet users and analyzed spreadsheet applications qualitatively. The analysis resulted in a set of basic programming goals and plans describing spreadsheet programming knowledge. This paper introduces a model for spreadsheet pr...
متن کاملPREDICTION OF LOAD DEFLECTION BEHAVIOUR OF TWO WAY RC SLAB USING NEURAL NETWORK APPROACH
Reinforced concrete (RC) slabs exhibit complexities in their structural behavior under load due to the composite nature of the material and the multitude and variety of factors that affect such behavior. Current methods for determining the load-deflection behavior of reinforced concrete slabs are limited in scope and are mostly dependable on the results of experimental tests. In this study, an ...

The development and evolution of any system–person, organization–nation depends on how the system succeeds to bridge the gap between what the system knows and what the system does (with the knowledge). We call this the gap between knowing and doing or the knowing-doing gap. If the system does not do what it knows, it will lose out in competition with other systems, its relative performance in...
متن کاملOntoClock, The Difference Between Having Ontological Knowledge and Knowing It
An SVG program, named OntoClock, is used to illustrate ontological knowledge. [Dodds2 2006] The SVG program OntoClock System (OCS) contains NASA JPL ontologies about Space, and Time. It is discussed in this paper that while OntoClock has knowledge of space and time its awareness of this knowledge is rather dim. A model of (nonexperiential) awareness is described, providing OntoClock with a circ...
